From Barber & Beauty Shop to Restaurant

One of Memphis’ favorite restaurants and brunch locations, The Beauty Shop, was once known as Atkins Beauty and Barbershop. Atkins served both men and women in his establishment, complete with a shoe shine station and everything.

From what we’ve been told, it was THE place to go in Cooper-Young.

The main barber and hair stylist continued on even after the business was sold to Robin Tucker. She redecorated with retro themed colors and photographs, and brought a vintage car in through the window to serve as a reception desk.

Her Hollywood Designs studio turned out amazing vintage styles amidst the traditional barbershop clients and “bluehairs” who remained customers of the original Atkins employees.

The shop’s final reincarnation came by way of Karen Carrier, who opened the Beauty Shop in 2002. The inside basically looks like it did when it was Atkins Beauty and Barber, just with tables and chairs added throughout.

You can even sit where Priscilla Presley once got her hair done!

Believe it or not, there’s even more to tell. But you’ll have to order your copy of Memphis Type History: Signs and Stories from Just Around the Corner to hear all that!
